Happy New Year! Ottawa’s Top Winter Events

Things to Do in Ottawa This January!

Skating on the Rideau Canal Skateway — All Month

No winter in Ottawa is complete without gliding along the Rideau Canal Skateway — the world’s largest naturally frozen skating rink. When conditions allow, this 7.8-kilometre stretch winds through the heart of the city, offering scenic views and classic winter vibes. Be sure to check ice conditions before heading out and find skate rentals downtown or at Dows Lake.

Winterlude Festival — January 30 to February 16, 2026

Kick off the capital’s biggest winter celebration! Winterlude returns with ice sculpture displays, snow playgrounds, live entertainment, and events across Ottawa and Gatineau. Highlights include sculpted art installations in Confederation Park and family fun at Snowflake Kingdom.

National Arts Centre (NAC) Winter Shows — All Month

Warm up with live performances at the National Arts Centre, from theatre and concerts to music series for all ages. In January 2026, highlights include iterations of the theatrical mystery Clue (Jan 6–11) and other exciting performances spread throughout the month.

Snowshoeing & Cross-Country Skiing in Gatineau Park — All Month

Just minutes from downtown Ottawa, Gatineau Park becomes a winter paradise with over 90 km of snowshoe trails and more than 200 km of cross-country ski trails for all skill levels. Whether you’re exploring peaceful snowshoe paths or skiing through snowy forests, this outdoor activity hub is perfect for a full day (or more!) of fresh air and exercise.

Cozy Café Stops — Little Victories & Other Winter Warmups

After a morning on the ice or trails, treat yourself to a warm drink and a cozy atmosphere. Ottawa’s café scene shines in winter, with local favourites like Little Victories Café + Bar in the Glebe and along Elgin Street offering artisan coffee, comfort snacks, and a perfect winter respite.
